Graveyard Dirt (Graveyard Established 1874)

This 8oz jar holds dirt from a cemetery which preserves graves that serve as vital records of the town’s history, capturing the lives of its residents, including many infants and children who endured the hardships of the era. Beyond its role as a historical archive, the site carries layers of local lore—most notably the long-standing belief that soil taken from a cemetery holds a special power. In folklore, cemetery dirt is said to connect the living with the dead, carrying with it protective or, at times, ominous qualities depending on how it is used. Such traditions reflect the enduring human attempt to find meaning in places of rest and memory. Recognized for both its cultural and historical significance, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970's.
